There are a total of four processes for the processing and production of automotive wiring harnesses, namely wire cutting, crimping, pre assembly, and final assembly. At present, only the opening and crimping parts have a high degree of automation. Due to the large and miscellaneous materials of wire harnesses and the inability to locate them, the assembly and testing parts still rely on a large amount of manual labor. Although automotive wire harness enterprises have made significant progress in automation in recent years, automotive wire harness processing is still a labor-intensive industry, with about 70% of the production process being manual, and labor costs accounting for a high proportion of the total cost of automotive wire harnesses. The cost of automotive wiring harnesses consists of material costs, processing fees, packaging and transportation fees, and management fees, with packaging and transportation fees accounting for a very low proportion. The cost of wire harness materials is mainly determined by the wire harness technical solution. The wire harness processing fee and management fee are mainly determined by the production volume of automotive wire harnesses, labor costs of wire harness suppliers, enterprise profits, and tooling allocation. With the continuous increase of vehicle configuration, the cost of wiring harness materials is constantly increasing.
At present, with the increase in labor, land use and other costs, the cost of wire harness processing and management is on the rise. The following are the cost composition ratios of low-voltage wiring harnesses (Figure 1) and wiring harness materials (Figure 2). The wiring harness material cost accounts for approximately 65% of the total wiring harness cost. In the design phase, the main approach is to reduce the cost of wiring harnesses by optimizing their design. In the later stage, the cost of wire harnesses is mainly reduced by optimizing the manufacturing process of wire harness suppliers and comparing prices.
